Description: Zinsser BIN Primer Sealer is a shellac-based primer for interior and spot exterior use on a variety of surfaces. Suitable for use on ceilings, walls, doors and trim and exterior spot priming of metal, trims, PVC and wood. It also provides excellent adhesion for hard to paint surfaces, along with superior stain and odour blocking properties, making it ideal for water and nicotine staining. The shellac-based formula helps to seal porous surfaces and holds back bleeding knots and sap streaks. Application is by brush, roller or spray with coverage up to 12.5sq/m per litre. Touch dry in 15 minutes and recoatable in 45 minutes.

Review: I often use Zinsser primers for decorating jobs and have had excellent results with Zinsser Bullseye products. This time I have used Zinsser BIN to coat some wood (dado, skirting etc) which had been previously been coated with a dark wood stain. Apparently this primer will stop that stain leaking through to the surface, although it is too early for me to comment on whether that is the case! I was surprised at how runny the primer is and found it a little difficult until I got the hang of it. I found I needed to put a small amount on the brush and paint it on carefully to avoid immediate drips. (Too much on the brush and it immediately runs off the wood and onto the floor.) After a minute or two, however, the applied primer seemed to thicken on the wood and could be spread out more easily. A little of this primer seems to go a long way. It dries very quickly and can be overcoated with more primer, if needed, about an hour later. I left it a couple of days before applying my white one-coat gloss paint. The results appear to be very good, but the real test will be whether the wood stain does not seep through (I will update this review at some point in the future). Next, I plan to use this primer on some old melamine wardrobes that I want to overpaint. I asked the manufacturer about this and they told me that Zinsser BIN will be the right primer for this, as I will not need to sand down the melamine first - the primer will stick to it and provide a suitable base for overpainting. Watch this space!
