Review: I bought these after my old telescopic anvil loppers finally gave up the ghost. Basically, the handles gave more leverage than the blade and anvil could take, so both tended to bend and kink. They then needed to be hammered flat to be of any use. Eventually they seemed to soften to the point that after hammering flat they would kink and bend at the drop of a hat. The Bahco shears are a revelation. The blades are really thick hardened steel and do not flex at all in use. The cutting blade is extremely sharp and has shown no signs of needing sharpening after a lot of really hard use. The blade pivot bolt is large diameter and looks to have excellent long term wear characteristics. They will cut wood up to 50mm thick, although obviously the thicker the wood, the more muscle needed - and since the handles are fixed length you can't get any more mechanical advantage out of them. The cut is very clean since they act just like what they really are: whopping great secateurs. Since there's no parallelogram-type linkage to minimise handle movement it can be tricky getting them in amongst branches when the handles need to be opened wide. And you'll need the handles opened wide to cut thicker branches - they have to be well up between the blades for maximum mechanical advantage. Conversely, anything up to about 15mm or so thick can easily be snipped at the blade tips. Generally cuts are easiest when made at right-angles to the branch. The handles are very strong and seem not to flex at all. I can see these outlasting the old anvil ones by decades and I would recommend them for any use - light gardening, heavy gardening, commercial tree lopping, everything. Not cheap but in view of likely longevity, good value for money.

Review: Bahco P19-80 Lopping Shear 32In A bad buy. Parts are not readily available in the UK, but some are I am told, in the USA. The counter blade breaks if used to cut a fir branch less than 30mm. See if you can Google any spares! Not suitable for use on trees. Might cope with box hedging?
