Description: Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus Translucent Woodstain is a low build, solvent-borne semi-gloss woodstain that can be used both as a base stain and as a finishing coat. It is highly translucent to bring out the beauty of woodgrain, it protects against mould and algae and is resistant to UV radiation, peeling and cracking. Cetol HLS Plus is also microporous and water-repellent It can be used as a finishing coat on exterior softwood and hardwood substrates such as cladding, fascias, soffits, rough sawn timber and fencing. As a base stain, Cetol HLS plus is readily absorbed into timber to provide a sound base for finishing coats. It can be used alone as a system on cladding, decking and garden furniture or as a base stain before the application of Cetol Filter 7 plus or Cetol THB plus on windows and doors. However it should not be used alone as a finish for hardwood timbers. Review: Most important thing as always is the preparation work. We hosed down our gate and lightly sanded it as recommended in advance (left hand door in photo). We applied one coat of the HLS base stain followed by 2 coats of the Filter 7. In decent weather both were easy to apply and were touch dry in a short period of time. The non drip and surprisingly non oily nature of the stain made it so easy to apply and clean up afterwards. Delivery was a lot faster than Amazon/the vendor had promised (guessing any forecast error was down to Covid-19). In fact when we ordered 2 more tins they arrived within a couple of days. Very happy with the results. Worth every penny.

Review: Have always been happy with Sikkens but not this time. Spent hours making a ledge and brace door for a customer who wanted a pine finish. Thankfully I’d only applied the stuff to one side which dried orange / yellow. I can only think the tin I received had been stored in an extreme temperature but with the hassle it caused me I certainly won’t risk using it again. Also whilst I’m at it, I don’t see the point in asking for a rating for either warmth or thickness in the review. Each product has its own unique viscosity and I’m not sure how to rate warmth even had it turned out the pine it should have been.
